British Columbia’s current virtual-care framework permits physicians located outside the province who hold an active licence with another medical regulatory body to provide virtual care to patients in British Columbia without obtaining an additional British Columbia medical licence.
The consulting physician is located and licensed in the United States and is not licensed by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia.

How Virtual Consultation Is Permitted in British Columbia
The College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia distinguishes between physicians who hold CPSBC licensure and physicians who are physically located outside the province.
Under the CPSBC Virtual Care practice standard, a physician or surgeon located outside British Columbia who holds an active licence with another medical regulatory body does not need to obtain an additional British Columbia licence solely to provide virtual care to a patient located in British Columbia.

If medication is recommended
A prescription issued solely by an out-of-country practitioner cannot ordinarily be dispensed by a British Columbia pharmacy. When medication requiring a local prescription is recommended, implementation may require an appropriately authorized Canadian prescriber to issue, rewrite, or co-sign the prescription.
Verigrate will not represent that a U.S. prescription can automatically be filled in British Columbia.

When Virtual Consultation May Not Be Appropriate
Virtual psychiatric consultation is not appropriate for every clinical situation. An in-person assessment, urgent evaluation, laboratory testing, physical examination, or local longitudinal clinician may be recommended when clinically necessary.
This service is not an emergency service. Patients experiencing an immediate psychiatric or medical emergency should use local emergency services.

Does the Verigrate physician hold CPSBC licensure?
No. The physician providing this service is physically located and licensed in the United States. The service relies on the CPSBC framework applicable to physicians located outside British Columbia.
Is this the same as seeing a psychiatrist licensed by CPSBC?
No. This is cross-border virtual psychiatric consultation. When local examination, ongoing local care, prescribing, emergency treatment, or other services are required, coordination with a Canadian clinician may be appropriate.
Can medication be prescribed?
Medication options may be discussed as part of the consultation. A prescription issued solely by a practitioner outside Canada cannot ordinarily be dispensed by a British Columbia pharmacy; a Canadian authorized prescriber may need to issue, rewrite, or co-sign a prescription.
Can my existing physician participate?
